for an inward journey this author would take. Of course, the exploration of materialism versus spirituality is not new. When Thoreau went into the woods, he did so to commune
with nature and perhaps to get a different perspective on ordinary life. Many people do go into the woods in order to get away from the intensity of city
life. While Thoreau was usually alone in the cabin he occupied, he did have many guests stay with him during the two years, and was known to take long walks
in order to visit family and friends in the nearby village (30). Thus, his journey of self discovery was not conducted in isolation. Still, he was able to reap the
benefits of communing with nature by living his day to day life mostly outdoors. This included relations with other humans as well. Based on the book, it is evident that
Thoreau went to Walden to explore lifes deep questions, and to be sure that he hadnt missed the real meaning of life. He looked at the solidarity of life and
the various aspects of existence such as working towards the American dream. Rejecting materialism, he explored ideas about what life was really about in the solitude reflected in Walden. His
rejection of the American dream likely came before he had embarked on this personal journey. He had some insight into the problem first. It was not as if he were
thrown into an isolated world with no direction. Rather, he chose his path. This is important to understand because many people learn by what life throws at them, good or
