considered one of the most exquisite points in the entire world. Thoreau had no idea at the time of his writing that he would be instigating such an environmental war.
While some want to preserve Walden Pond as a sanctuary that is accessible only by foot, others believe it is meant to be developed into a recreational area that
would offer fishing, boating and swimming. More than six hundred thousand people already visit Walden Pond on a yearly basis, "flocking" (Andrews 30) to see the beauty about which
Thoreau wrote. However, it is this very group of people that serve to destroy the beauty they are attempting to appreciate. The disregard for Walden Ponds fragility has
caused its waters, forests and meadows to continually be threatened (Andrews 30). Thoreau could never have anticipated the degradation that would ultimately come from his discovery. Indeed, it is
not in any way his fault that humanity has set its sights on taking with them a piece of Walden Pond; however, it was through his vision that people were
first able to ascertain the beauty of something so elusive and grand. "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of
life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived" (Thoreau PG). There is
