quite able to find her real purpose in life, despite the fact that she spends her entire existence attempting to do so. Terribly unfulfilled, Nora discovers that her entire
life is a lie -- especially those closest to her -- which compels her to seek out the truth about both herself and those around her in order to gain
the courage she does not possess being locked away in her safe, secure yet stifling "doll house" of a life. Inasmuch as it appears that Nora is quite content with
her life as it exists, that is only on the exterior; the major elements of the plays structure begin when Nora realizes that her true desire is to break free
from the social barriers keeping her from finding out who she really is. However, even though her ultimate quest is to discover whatever is missing from her life, she
feels she is bound to live as she has become accustomed -- a servant to a domineering husband -- because she does not have the wherewithal to begin her journey.
The plays major elements end when Ibsen identifies Noras desires and the limitations that forever keep her from attaining them. Mrs. Linde serves to foil Nora in Acts I
and II by tearing down Noras optimistic attitude with her own weighty pessimism. Mrs. Linde has nothing whatsoever to say with any uplifting tone when she comes to visit
Nora; instead, she burdens her with all the bad things that have been going on in her life over the past few years, all the while drawing comparisons between hers
