using this paper properly! Designing a Setting for Nora The single most prominent message to convey as a set designer for a movie based on Henrik Ibsens (1828-1906) "A
Dolls House" would be, in a word, "constraint." Despite the fact that the story takes place in the Victorian Age (produced in 1879) and the likely decoration for the
set would be the overbearing and often fussy decor of Victoriana, the set should not reflect either a focus on creature comforts or a sense of pride in possession. This
house serves only as a holding place for Nora. She is not passionate about her house as a home. It is only a house and, in many ways,
only a job. It should therefore reflect that Nora is constrained in her life, her relationships, social boundaries, economically, even emotionally. The sets for the movie should convey
the restraint, propriety, and reserve that is also made physically imaginable through the character of the "proper" Nora and Torvald. However, the house should be solid and well-structured. It
should convey a sense of the strength that is reflected in Nora. The adornments and the furnishings are only accessories to the stability and strength of the structure.
As such, the house and the set serve as something of a metaphor for Nora herself. The lighting, the movement within the house, and even the colors should reflect
