seems almost legendary. But in fact it was a horrific struggle that killed an entire generation of young men and ruined the economy of Europe. This paper considers the lives
of a young Canadian couple and how the "Great War" impacted their lives; in particular, what it meant for the status of women; what it meant for politics and how
it affected the economy. The main part of the paper takes the form of letters between Henri and Julia. Background Henri and Julia live in Manitoba, in a small town.
Julia is active in the Womens Christian Temperance Union and has been strongly influenced by Nellie McClung; Henri has fallen under the influence of Thomas A. Crerar, has stood for
office and now represents his constituents as a Liberal member of the provincial legislature in Winnipeg. Julia has decided to remain at home with the children while Henri stays
in the city during the legislative session. They have arrived at this decision jointly, since they both feel strongly that they do not want the children brought up in the
city. Also, despite the fact that we live in a very cynical age, were also going to assume that Henri and Julia are much in love, and neither of them
is going to stray from the marriage during their separation. Well also imagine that at the time Henri leaves for Winnipeg, they both know about the others interests, but their
