paint bright and dark colors. So he went to places that were bright and sunny" (K., 2002; matisse.htm). On one of these trips he met the Impressionist painter "John Russell." whose work, along with other Impressionists, inspired him to add more colors to his paintings. "He painted flowers, fruits and glassware...Henri was always looking for new ways to improve his art" and now "now began to use lighter and calmer colors and lots of decorative lines. (K., 2002; matisse.htm). This approach to color and line is incredibly apparent in his painting titled "Poppies." In the following paper we examine his painting from many artistic and technical standpoints. Lines The variation in lines in this painting is incredibly obvious, and also incredibly powerful. For example, we have the vertical lines of the walls behind the vase of flowers, and where the walls meet the ground we have the diagonal lines which almost zigzag through the entire painting. The lines of the flowers, on the other hand, are curved and unpredictable. They are not geometrical structured lines. We also have the stool upon which the vase of flowers rests, which offers us lines that are somewhere in between the lines of the walls and wallpaper, and the lines of the baseboards. In essence, there is almost every geometrical line or direction represented in this painting. And, it seems that in order to balance all of these geometrical straight lines we have the flowers, but perhaps most importantly the large object that is the vase. In the lines of the vase itself we are offered a very stable and yet soft set of lines that balances the other varieties of lines taking place all around.
