The Lost Generation was the generation of young adults who were suffering in the aftermath of WWI and seemed to have no direction in life in relationship to their identity and their ability to find self fulfillment. Interestingly enough, even though all of his stories did not directly deal with people struggling after WWI, that theme of finding identity and self fulfillment seemed to permeate his work regardless. With that in mind the following paper examines this particular theme through 4 relatively different stories from Hemingway. The stories are "A Farewell to Arms," "Hills Like White Elephants," "The Sun Also Rises," and "The Old Man and the Sea." Identity and Self Fulfilment It is in the characterizations of the individuals that we first see true thematic strength arise in relationship to identity and self fulfillment. In "Hills Like White Elephants" this identity is even included in the names of the people, which are never known. We have the American Man and the Girl, although she is obviously not a girl but the mans lover. The lack of real names indicates that these people have little identity and the story is about their plans to have an abortion, something that is never really defined either, and as such indicates they are seeking some answers, some way to self fulfillment. In this particular short story we see the doubt related to the issues of identity and self fulfillment when the Girl asks the man if he will still love her when it is all over, if things will be the same again. He indicates they will be wonderful: "Well be fine afterwards. Just like we were before" but she is not convinced, although he argues that it is the only thing (the unwanted pregnancy) that is making them ...
