and caring each of our main characters needed. Perhaps no one could have helped our three protagonists at this point in their lives.
The old man, in his 80s, alone, nearly deaf visiting the cafe every evening to drink cognac. He is always the last customer to leave and the younger
waiter becomes impatient with him. He tells the older waiter the old man tried to hang himself the previous week but the daughter found him before he was dead. He
cannot understand why someone who seemed to have enough money would try to commit suicide, "He has everything" he tells the older waiter. "Everything" to this young man means the
old man seems to have a lot of money. He simply cannot understand when the older waiter tries to explain why the old man is so lonely, why he really
has nothing. The young Indian, unlike the old man, succeeds in killing himself. He slits his throat as his wife is
having their baby. His act was accomplished so quietly, no one knew it had happened despite the fact he was lying on the bunk above his wifes. Why exactly has
he taken his life just as his child is being born? Perhaps because of the arrogance of the white doctor who is more interested in his success than in the
