redeemer, old and evil, and, or, young and innocent. In Hemingways very short story, Hills Like White Elephants, the female character is seen as ambiguous. That is, she
is not exactly sure of who she is or what she wants. Hemingway, as is his style, leaves a lot to the imagination. The story focused on
a single conversation between a man and a woman in a bar in Spain. He wants her to do something that is simple, but states over and over that
he does not want her to do it if she doesnt want to (but its a simple thing, he assures her). The woman is the main character, if
the reader views the story from her perspective. If viewed from the male perspective, she is seen as compliant, if a bit sulky. The woman, on the surface,
is seen to be in control - it is, after all, her decision. The underlying message is that she will do what the man wants or he will not
be happy and they will not be happy. Hemingway portrays her as being compliant by having her agree to all of his suggestions, seeking his approval and in
conforming to gender role expectations in other areas, such as his taking the bags to the train. It is not that she is portrayed as irrational - although her
comment about the hills seeming like white elephants because of the skin peeking through the trees is not totally on focus. Rather, she is seen as weak and dependent.
