importance of this work, aside from the skill of the author, is that it prompts people to take a look at their own lives and stare death in the face.
Not everyone agrees with that assessment. In fact, some have been critical of the dark and abrupt ending that Hemingway is so famous for.
Ernest Hemingway is however clearly introspective and has a great understanding of the human heart and mind. In a way, Hemingways comprehension may be equated with the notion that
every person is full of despair and conflict. In some ways that is dismal but there is always some light. Hemingway knew how to accentuate the light in a compelling
way. He brought his flighty character a mate in Catherine. But the ending would not be happy, despite the love that they shared. In some way, Catherine and Frederic were
star-crossed. At the same time, Hemingways own mental state likely enters the picture here. In looking at the life of this infamous
author, one wonders if in fact some of that depression had seeped into the pages of his novels and short stories. Could Hemingway have written a bright tale? It is
true that many authors report that they derive their energy from anger and depression. In fact, the late Andy Kaufman who suffered from a mental disorder refused to take pills
because he did not want to lose his creativity. He did not want the medication recommended to change his personality. Similarly, al} though the last days of Ernest Hemingway\d5s life
must have been tragic, his ability to see life in a particular way may have only been possible due to his depressed state of mind. Now, the question as to
