time reflects somewhat of a displaced distance from a reality so different in the daytime. At his stage of life everything is nada, inasmuch as his life is full of nada. He has no one or nothing to go home to, which mirrors the same predicament as the old man who sits in the corner drinking his brandy; to both of them, the caf?s significance is in being a connection to their otherwise dull and meaningless existence. Unlike the young waiter, the older waiter has no motivation for leaving the comfort of the caf?s clean, well-lighted atmosphere. Getting old is not a socially accepted occurrence; contempt and disrespect stem from the aspect of aging against ones will, with people looking upon the elderly as slow, incapable, broken down and virtually worthless individuals. The notion of ageism, the negative attitude associated with getting old, is apparent in myriad ways, with its roots likely planted in Greek philosophy where old age was akin to weakness. It is the caf?s friendliness and neutrality that provide both men with a sense of empowerment against a society that views them as little more than disposable commodities. Hemingway makes clear his own feelings even without stating them by delving more into the older waiters character than the younger ones. He works at portraying the older waiter as someone everyone can relate to, someone that everyone ultimately becomes. Whether this meaning is truth and beauty, comfort and happiness or any other pertinent combination, the author implies that each person harbors the hope of making sense out of life with the help of establishing significance to it.
