settle easily back into his former middle-class lifestyle, find a job and raise a family, Krebs finds that he has changed too much from his experiences to feel "at home"
any longer in his former life. It is a telling fact that Krebs is one of the last of the towns young veterans to return home, implying that this is
something that he did not want to do. An examination of Hemingways characterization of Krebs shows him to be an anti-hero, that is, rather than fitting the conventional mold
of heroism, Krebs is disillusioned by his wartime experiences. Detached from life and passive, Krebs has had all the joy that he formerly found in life sucked out of him
by what he has experienced, which is something that he realizes that his parents will never comprehend. Prior to the war, Hemingway lets the reader know that Krebs was
in tune with small town life. He attended a Methodist school, which implies that, at one time, his religious beliefs were in synch with those of his deeply religious mother.
However, Krebs is now so changed by the trauma of combat that he has difficult relating to anyone, and one feels that this includes God. Krebs halfheartedly desires
some of the local women, but he does not follow through on this desires because - above all else - he wishes to avoid consequences. He deeply wants to have
to ties or obligations that might, one assumes, only increase his feelings of guilt and inadequacy. He can tolerate his little sister because he can shrug off her demands
and she will still love him. His mother, on the other hand, has demands that are more complex. She cannot conceive of how her sons struggles and sufferings affect him
