of mankind. His stories are rarely, if ever, truly happy stories as he focuses on aspects of humanity that others can only touch upon. In three of his short stories
we see themes and elements that prove the stories to be Hemingways. The stories examined are "Indian Camp," "Soldiers Home," and "A Clean Well-Lighted Place." In the following paper we
examine each separately and then provide a comparison of the elements, or literary techniques, and themes within. Indian Camp In this particular story we have reflections of life
and death as well as warmth and coldness. It is a gruesome story to some extent as well as a story of arrogance and suffering. It is also a tale
of humility and arrogance. In this story, first and foremost, we come to understand that the doctor is a white man. He is a man who feels he has
powers beyond most, if not all, thinking, perhaps, that is some sort of god, a common attitude among doctors it seems. But, in this story such a reality is even
more pronounced as the doctor is taken aboard a boat, or canoe, to a place where Indians live in incredibly poverty. When they arrive there and the woman is in
great pain, screaming, the arrogance of the doctor comes out in the following: "But her screams are not important. I dont hear them because they are not important" (Hemingway). The
husband in the bunk above the woman turns away from the pain, the screaming, and the arrogance of the ignorant white man who happens to be doctor. The arrogance continues
as he goes about the task of doing a Cesarean on the woman. And, all he can say, again in his arrogance, is "Thats one for the medical journal, George...Doing
