writing, his direct, simple, yet forceful prose" had "exerted an undoubted influence on the new generation of Spanish novelists" (Lamb 453). From Italy, author Carlo Levi credited Hemingway with
being a fundamental influence in "determining the character and mode of thought of our time" (Lamb 453). The list of authors and editors who feel that Hemingways work continues to
be a major influence on literature is extensive. Today, critics take for granted that Hemingways style and techniques profoundly influence subsequent generations of writers across the globe (Lamb
453). While Hemingway has influenced writers worldwide, there is also no doubt that he revolutionized American literature (Parshall 67). His prose style of "short, strong, sonorous sentences" - his
finely drawn heroes who were broken by the world, but "left strong at the broken places" -- these factors and more have changed the landscape of words and mages
for all the American authors that came after him (Parshall 67). This might not have come about if Hemingway had been influenced early on by courses in college English,
but, as it was, the main influence on Hemingway was journalism. The style sheet at the Kansas City Star stated: "Use short
sentences. Use short first paragraphs. Use vigorous English" (Parshall 67). These were rules that Hemingway never forgot. He also picked up style elements from Mark Twain and Stephen Crane; Ezra
