or another as it concerns the existence of the common man. They are stories which take us into a vague, yet powerful, reality that is often allusive, but very poignant.
Each tale has individuals who are perhaps somewhat depressing, but powerfully real. As one author indicates, "Hemingway once wrote, I am trying to make, before I get through, a picture
of the world--or as much of it as I have seen. Boiling it down always, rather than spreading it out thin" (Lombardi aa072100a.htm). Hemingway does this successfully with "Hills Like
White Elephants" and "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" for, as mentioned, they are depictions of the simplistic realities that face the common man. In the following paper we examine the two
stories separately and then compare and contrast them. Hills Like White Elephants In this story we first note a man and a woman, or "a girl," as they
sit down at a cafe of sorts to have a beer, or two. They seem incredibly distant and distracted as they try to converse with one another. The woman mentions
that the hills look like white elephants, for want of something to say. In many ways this sums up the excitement the two share. They are obviously not really enjoying
this moment, or life, for some reason. And, the reason is never clearly spelled out. We begin to note the source of their problem when the man begins discussing
the "operation": "Its really an awfully simple operation, Jig, the man said. Its not really an operation at all" (Hemingway NA). He goes on, as she remains silent, illustrating that
it is an operation that lets air in. Now, it should be noted that the operation is never truly defined though we know it to be an abortion. This is
