of masculinity. An examination of Hemingways A Farewell to Arms demonstrates that Frederic Henry, the protagonist of this work, is in many ways an exemplary Hemingway hero. Stoic, courageous, never
whining or feeling sorry for himself -- no matter what his lost -- Frederic personifies Hemingways concept of heroism. However, in creating this portrait of heroism, Hemingway creates a portrait
of heroism that contrasts with the traditional association of heroism that associates it solely with the battlefield. An examination of Hemingways characterization of Frederic Henry shows how Frederic relates to
Hemingways life and era. As the novel opens, Frederic -- as Hemingway himself did during World War I -- is serving as an ambulance driver in the Italian army.
He has already learned that all the associations of war with glory are false. Frederic is a disillusioned, alienated man. Over the course of the novel, his alienation grows
to the point that, spurred by his love for Catherine, he abandons the war, making a "separate peace" (Hemingway 243). As this suggests, the novel pivots around Henrys personal growth
and its ramifications and, in so doing provides a serious anti-war statement against the "Great War" and its leaders. To Frederic, the world seemed "all unreal in the dark...
and not caring in the night, sure that this was all and all and all and not caring" (Hemingway 13). There is little said about Frederics life before the war,
although the reader is led to believe that a long estrangement exists between Frederic and his family. Also there is little said about why he enlisted in the first place.
