his first novel, A Farewell to Arms, exemplifies the basic aspects of what came to be known as the Hemingway style, as well as the Hemingway hero. Hemingways prose
style has been described as "short, strong, sonorous sentences," which feature "finely drawn heroes," who were broken by the world, but "left strong" at those broken places (Parshall 67). The
following examination will show that this description applies well to Hemingways Farewell to Arms. Style of writing The Hemingway style might never have developed if Hemingway had attended
college and been exposed to courses in creative writing as envisioned at the typical university. As it was Hemingway had his writing apprenticeship at the Kansas City Star newspaper. The
style sheet at the Star read, "Use short sentences, Use short first paragraphs. Use vigorous English" Parshall 67). These were rules for composition that Hemingway never forgot. He also adopted
stylistic elements from Mark Twain and Stephen Crane, as well as Ezra Pround and Gertrude Stein. Nevertheless, the Hemingway style, with its short, clipped, simple declarative sentences is a completely

in the Italian ambulance corps during World War I. Henry meets and falls in love with Catherine Barkley, a British nurse. Soon after their romance begins, Henry is wounded
