This paper discusses Hemby Childrens Hospital and the outstanding programs to be found there. Discussion Hemby Childrens Hospital is actually a part of Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. Presbyterian has operated the childrens hospital since 1994; it has "38 beds in 33,000 square feet on its second floor" (Garloch, September 2007). The childrens hospital is thus wholly contained within the larger facility, which is the second largest in the region (Garloch, September 2007). Hemby also features a "separate childrens emergency department," opened in 2003, "and a new 38-bed neonatal intensive care unit opened in 2006" (Garloch, September 2007). The hospital was named after the Alex Hemby Foundation, which donated $1 million to it (Garloch, September 2007). Hemby Childrens Hospital has been "accepted into the National Association of Childrens Hospitals and Related Institutions" (Garloch, September 2007). Hemby and the other childrens hospitals in the area have child-life specialists on staff, who are there to "help young patients understand and cope with stressful health-care experiences" (Garloch, September 2007). By concentrating their services in one area, Hemby, like the other hospitals, has been able to "recruit doctors in a variety of pediatrics specialties -- neurology, urology, cardiology, anesthesiology, surgery, oncology, rheumatology and adolescent medicine" (Garloch, September 2007). At Hemby, the list of subspecialties includes, under neonatology: "Pediatric anesthesiology, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric EEG/Sleep Center, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric ENT, and Pediatric Gastroenterology" (Pediatric subspecialties).
