to help these spouses adjust to meet the needs of the stroke sufferer a participatory action research (PAR) framework provides a strong foundation. The need to understand the care
needs cannot be understated as rehabilitation can increase the lost skills and starts immediately. There are also requirement to help patients understand what they can do for themselves and how
to cope, whilst this is more of a patient issue, the carers also need to be aware of the situation. There are four stages to each cycle. These are
plan, act, observe and reflect. The planning stage will begin prior to the first session with the spouses. The plan may begin with the planning of a session, background research
into the patients and conditions and some general information about what has happened and the short and long term impact on the stroke victim and general patterns that they
can expect. It is also important to plan for flexibility at this stage, all patients will have different abilities and carers will have different concerns and worries which will need
to be addressed prior to the tackling of the practical issues. The plan will have to take into consideration what needs to be taught, aspects such ass mobility as
well as issues such as helping the spouse retain dignity when there are bladder control difficulties, which are common in stroke patients (Royal Collage of Physicians, 2003). Spouses will also
