is thousands of disabled veterans. Concurrently, our government is sending billions of dollars oversees to help countries like Iraq and Afghanistan rebuild their economies. Many disabled veterans, however, back here at home not only remain unemployed but are also homeless. This includes not just veterans from old affairs like Vietnam but veterans from our current affair in Iraq and Afghanistan. Indeed, some 160,000 military personnel transition out of active duty every year (Solis, 2009). The thesis can be presented that rather than continuing to waste American taxpayer dollars by sending money oversees we should be helping our own veterans to find employment and adequate housing. The inability to find jobs can have very serious retributions for veterans. Although the government contends that the unemployment rate among veterans is some 8 percent lower than that of non-veterans (Solis, 2009), even that number is still too high and numerous societal parameters attest to that fact. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, for example, an estimated twenty-three percent of the homeless individuals across the nation are veterans (Dynes, 2005). The VA estimates a total number of 299,321 veterans are homeless (Caswell, 2005). Insuring that our veterans are adequately employed can obviously make the difference between them having a roof over their heads or not. Accomplishing the goals proposed above, of course, will require a multi-faceted approach. First, veterans must be trained so that they are qualified to find gainful employment. Training will facilitate them finding jobs and jobs will facilitate them being able to afford adequate housing. These, in combination, will better our veterans quality of life.
