not have time and many others are just trying to make ends meet and only have scant time left for their children. They look at volunteer work as something to
do with free time, but others see it as sort of an obligation. What is the morality of volunteerism? Some time ago, Robert Putnam wrote Bowling Alone which argues that
there is an erosion of social capital and this is something that is disturbing to society. Also, volunteerism is good because it translates to free labor ("Goodness as Weapon,"
1995). From a Kantian perspective, it is good, because volunteerism also generates moral value ("Goodness as Weapon," 1995). It may be gleaned that some theorists see volunteerism almost as a
human obligation, particularly when one has the time. Otherwise, it can be a personal moral goal. Many people reach middle age or old age and realize that they want to
begin to give back to the community. They want to share their wisdom and talents with others. Sometimes, people do not have the wherewithal to volunteer but have a burning
desire due to some injustice they have witnessed. They may have seen children expelled from school for a dumb reason and run for the board or they may witness a
dog being beaten to death and nothing is done. In fact, the plight of the homeless dog is a cause that many find worth embracing. With a greater number of
volunteers, the plight of the homeless dog will be more fully addressed. Much has been written about the dog and the companionship he gives to man. It is a gift
of sorts with a proven track record of lowering blood pressure. Many people consider their dogs members of the family. Yet, the law is such that unless there is
