motorcycle. Those who do not wish to wear helmets argue one side while those who argue for the use of helmets obviously argue another, a side that claims that the
amount of deaths are seriously reduced through the wearing of helmets. The following paper examines the arguments, providing facts, authoritative opinions, examples and other perspectives related to the arguments. The
paper argues that helmets should be worn. Wearing a Helmet The first aspect of this argument is that wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle can and does
save lives. The statistics are quite similar in all states that have repealed laws about wearing helmets and Arkansas and Texas are just two of those states. "In Arkansas, motorcycle
fatalities rose 21 percent in the first full year following repeal, while deaths rose by 31 percent in Texas during the same time period" (Tyson, 2000). The facts speak for
the truth, that wearing helmets helps protect lives. This is seen in the fact that once those helmet laws were taken away, deaths increased. Another source indicates that "Helmets reduce
the risk of death by 29% and are 67% effective in preventing brain injuries to motorcycle riders. (NHTSA, 2001)" (Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, 2004). On the other
side of the argument we have those who claim that wearing helmets increases the chances of getting into an accident. "They site vision and hearing impairment. They argue that while
wearing a helmet, they are unable to hear their environment and unable to see without impairment" (Motorcycle Helmet Resource Center, 2004). However, in at least one study, this was proven
to be wrong. In a study conducted by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in 1994 it seems that there was no significant risk involved in wearing a helmet. "The results
