controversy ever since the group came on the scene in the early 1950s. While members of the gang claim they are simply motorcycle enthusiasts that like riding together and hosting
fundraisers, parties and road trips, Hells Angels has been at the forefront of some major criminal investigations that have involved in drug trafficking, theft, assault and even murder. It was
a picture of alarming menace. Depraved hoodlums--unmanageable, incorrigible, vindictive and organized--roamed the California highways in stripped down Harley-Davidson motorcycles. They were dressed like pirates, with full beards, a ring in
one ear, shoulder-length hair, an embroidered winged skull on the backs of their sleeveless denim jackets, Iron Crosses on their chests, swastikas on their helmets. These werent the teen-agers of
the usual urban gang, but adults, ranging in age from the early 20s to mid-40s. They could strike anywhere in the state, and they didnt fear the police. According to
a criminal report at the time, the 450 members of the club had a record of 874 felony arrests, 300 felony convictions, and more than 1,000 misdemeanor convictions. The report
held that there would have been an even more extensive record, but for the Angels practice of intimidating witnesses that number seemed less than what the number should have been.
