The concept of Hell is something that seldom escapes a Christians mind. Dante, the classical poet, described Hell as a place where the hope for salvation no
longer existed. The precept of hope is sometimes viewed and interpreted very differently by different cultures and individuals. This precept is also viewed quite differently in various forms
of literature. It is the Bible, of course, which defines the Christian precept of hope. All of Christianity is centered around the hope of an afterlife. Through
the acceptance of Christ and individual is assured the joys of Heaven. The only condition for that acceptance is that Christ be acknowledged and asked for salvation. In
Hell, however, that possibility is forever lost. In Dantes "Divine Comedy" the concept of hope is most emphasized by the proclamation
of the opposite of hope or the loss of it. Inscribed on the entrance to Hell is the proclamation:
"Abandon Hope, All Ye Who Enter Here" This inscription is
only a introduction to all that awaits those that enter the gates of Hell and who therefore fail to achieve the Christian precept of hope. Dantes epic poem recounts
an imaginary journey through Hell but it contrasts the horrors found there with the wonders found in Paradise. From a personal perspective, this concept is a disturbing one.
