a story about goddesses, power, and Helen of Troy. While the story itself would not exist without the abduction of Helen, the character of Helen is present very little in
the story and is ultimately of very little significance in the story. The following paper examines how and why this particular story is really not about Helen. The
Iliad As mentioned, the story of The Iliad revolves around the abduction of Helen but Helen is not much a part of the story. It is not the main theme
because in a world of men, controlled by men, and ruled by men, stories are important only as they pertain to men. Helen was only a factor in the story
that led to the war. Perhaps if it had not been Helen whose actions started the war, it would have been something else that started the war. Clearly men do
not go to war over one small thing but rather it is more than likely that tensions between Athens and Troy were building and only needed one small event to
give rise to war, and a reason for war. A woman, even the most beautiful woman of all, is only, after all, a woman. In ancient times women had
no power and they were possessions. So in that respect with Paris of Troy stealing something from Athens was cause enough for battle. The woman was important only as long
as it involved the world of men. If Helen had been nobody, a common woman, even the most beautiful of common women, her abduction would not have led to war
and as such she was not important. She was simply the straw that broke the camels back so to speak, or the match that lit the fire.
