overcome any perceived barrier. As a young woman Keller became determined to learn about the world and to improve the lives of others. With insight, energy, and deep
devotion to humanity, she lectured throughout the world, worked to forward her ideas in Congress, and wrote thousands of letters asking for contributions to finance efforts to improve the welfare
of the blind. She visited hospitals and helped blind soldiers. She taught the blind to be courageous and to make their lives rich, productive, and beautiful for others
and for themselves (HELEN KELLER Biography). It is not quite known what inspires people to reach far beyond what others deem to be impossible limitations. Because Keller was
born seeing and hearing, the shock of losing both together after a childhood illness created an even greater struggle for her to deal with than if she had been without
those senses from the start. She knew exactly what she was missing and was distraught with the reality of never again having sight or sound. Several people were
instrumental in her first being able to communicate beyond the primitive means of screams and laughter - most notably Kellers lifelong teacher Anne Sullivan (Smith-DArezzo 107; Dark 34) - but
after that it was all Kellers internal fortitude that allowed her achieve such tremendous heights of what she deemed as her humanitarian duty (OBrien et al 161).
