It is a work that illustrates Henrik Ibsens examination of the society that surrounded him at the time. The characters can be frivolous and arrogant, offering a look at the
nature of the wealthy, and there are elements that speak of the social expectations of men and women. The play is filled with a variety of information about the particular
time period and the following essay discusses the values and beliefs presented in the story as they illustrate the time period. Hedda Gabler by Ibsen: Culture of the
Time The first social condition presented in this story is that of aristocracy. The character of Hedda is one who is from the aristocratic institution of the society and she
feels that all the people around her, including her husband, are essentially beneath her. The reader is introduced to her position in society in the beginning when two women are
talking about her, remembering her as the daughter of a General and thus high above the common middle class bourgeois people such as her husband: "Think of the sort of
life she was accustomed to in her fathers time" (Ibsen I). These women are awaiting Hedda and her husbands return from their honeymoon and indicate that Hedda will likely be
"terrible grand in her ways" (Ibsen I). Hedda is perhaps everything they assumed she would be. She is arrogant and above these people that surround her. The people who
surround her are indeed the bourgeois class, the middle and upper middle class people, but they are individuals who do work to some extent for their wealth. Heddas husband is
a doctor and another character who comes in is a writer. Hedda, however, is used to money with no work and finds everyone and everything distasteful to her. She is
