Darkness and Imperialism by S. L. More, 10/2010 --properly! In Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness, the main character Charles Marlow relates
his story of being a captain of a Congo steamer. In this framed narrative, the reader watches as Marlow goes from a fascination of imperialism to experiencing the darkness of
people who are supposed to be good. In this paper, I will discuss the paradoxes of imperialism in the late 19th century experienced by Marlow in the Heart of Darkness.
While the new imperialism in Britain during the late 1800s brought trade and valuable products from the Congo, Conrads story created a bridge between Victorian values and modernism ideals.
Civilization is twisted upon its head to show a hypocritical background. When power over a group of people is given to one given to another, then corruption is sure to
follow. The natives that Marlow interacts with are exposed to inefficiency and brutality. These people were forced into work and are treated poorly. He finds himself comparing White and
Black people as the Whites appears to feel more at home than the Blacks. Despite his initial experiences with the natives, he finds himself drawn to Kurtz with a strong
desire to meet him. Kurtz is described as a musician and a painter who is charismatic with a strong ability to lead men. Marlows men turn out to be
