both authored by Conrad. In order to understand both, they must be compared and contrasted. "Apocalypse Now" is not just a movie.
It is a movie based on "Hearts of Darkness" although there are a number of differences between the two mediums. The Civil War had occurred prior to the
writing of "Hearts of Darkness," and neither World War was in sight at the time. In the movie, "Apocalypse Now," the War in Vietnam is taking place. It
is the war and the madness that occurs during war that makes this movie what it became. It is evident that there
exists a similarity in the narratives of both "Hearts of Darkness" and "Apocalypse Now." Mediating narrators are used in both works. At first glance, the stories may appear
different, however, on further inspection, the themes of the two are similar. Cahir said, "The confrontation with the moral abyss and the alienation that this creates in one who
survives such an ordeal are demonstrated in both Marlow and Willard, the story and the films respective protagonists" (Cahir 181). There is moral
conflict in both "Heart of Darkness" and "Apocalypse Now." In the book, it occurs between the main characters. In the movie, it occurs between the supporting characters.
Greiff said, "One position is that of the dedicated craftsman or professional, protected from moral collapse by dedication to an ideal. Opposed to that is the role of the
hollow man, empty of morality and ready to embrace evil" (188). Those roles are not well represented in either the main or the secondary characters (Greiff 188).
