Frequently, congenital heart defects are discovered at the time of birth and measures are taken to improve the infants condition, ranging from pharmacological interventions to surgery. In some
cases, heart defects are not discovered for some time, resulting in damage to the heart and circulatory system as a result of poor cardiac functioning. Understanding the variant nature
of congenital heart disease and the potential impacts is important for classroom teachers. The National Heart and Blood Institute (2009) described congenital heart disease as a term referring to heart
defects that involve structural problems in the interior walls of the heart, the valves, or the arteries and veins that move blood through the body. As a result of
these defects, the presence of this type of disease results in changes in the way blood flows through the heart and how blood, oxygen and nutrients are distributed through the
body (NHBI, 2009). In most cases, fetal cardiac anomalies can be assessed early in gestation, creating a path towards more effective treatment modalities, including the use of pharmacological interventions
and the use of surgical procedures either during pregnancy or directly following birth (Yatel et al., 1997). Because of the range of congenital heart defects,
this disease impacts a much larger segment of the population than one might suspect. Congenital heart defects occur in approximately 8 out of every 1,000 newborns and this means
that over 35,000 infants are born with a defect in the United States annually (NHBI, 2009). Hoffman & Kaplan (2002) maintained that depending on the study, a varied number
of live births with congenital heart defects could be viewed, ranging from 4 out of 1,000 to 50 out of 1,000 births. While some of these conditions are relatively
