on elements of William Randolph Hearsts life. Of course it was not a film about Hearst, but according to many, largely based on the man and his life. The following paper examines this particular possibility or reality. Hearst in Citizen Kane PBS (2010) notes how, "Long before Orson Welles Citizen Kane was released in 1941, there was a buzz about the movie and the boy genius who made it. At a preview screening, nearly everyone present realized that they had seen a work of brilliance." However, there was one individual, Hedda Hopper, who was aghast at the film and its attack on a man she considered to be great; William Randolph Hearst (PBS, 2010). It seems that this was perhaps the beginning of the drama that erupted between the film and Hearst, and between Welles and Hearst. In 1941 a publication states that "Suppression of the motion-picture Citizen Kane, Orson Welless first film venture, has been demanded of RKO Radio Pictures, Inc., by representatives of William Randolph Hearst the publisher" (New York Times [1], 1941). As a result of such attention and as a result of the power possessed by Hearst, the film was ultimately put on the shelves in many instances. In the beginning it seems that Hearst brought in representatives to look and find flaws that would give him power. One article states how, "The lawyers, who viewed the film in a local projection room, are said to be of the opinion that the film is not libelous" (New York Times [2], 1941). The Hearst representatives, however, protested. RKO decided to continue with their release of the film and even launched what is considered to have been one of the biggest campaigns for the film that had been seen in film history (New York ...
