goals, determine strategies for their attainment and to evaluate his/her capacity to reach those goals. In the development of a plan for personal improvement in nursing care, individuals must
be able to develop methods for self-evaluation. For my personal goal of becoming more politically aware, I created two measurable goals that demonstrate my understanding of the processes involved
in healthcare legislation in New Mexico. Specifically, I identified the need to assess at least one legislative bill that had gone through the New Mexico legislative session that has
to do with health care over the course of the summer session. The second goal, a long-term goal, was to broaden my awareness of legislative change by relating four
different changes that have occurred in health care legislation and their impacts by graduation. These measurable outcomes are derivative of a focus on political awareness of healthcare issues.
I recognized the need for measurable outcomes, and so I identified goals that related to specific numbers of legislation. My short-term goals for the summer term were to identify at
least two different difficult and positive situations in class or clinical situations and to discuss strategies to address these situations. By graduation, my long-term goal was to list 10
strategies and 10 tools that were used and to be able to relate examples of at least five of these. These goals support self-evaluation because they demonstrate the
specific nature of tools that can be used in difficult situations and show what has been learned their application in both positive and negative scenarios. By being able to
