we must remember that it is this same population that is to be credited with the many advancements and improvements that have been made in American society over the past
half century or so, the harsh reality is that our demographics are top heavy. The number of Americans at or near retirement age far exceeds the number of Americans
that will be continue making tax contributions over the next couple of decades. Obvious problems result when the the number of taxpayers contributing to the nations healthcare and retirement
system is less than the number receiving benefits from those systems. The resounding question that is being bounced about in academia and the halls of Congress alike is
how will we pay for the long term needs of our elderly? Largely as a result of our improved health care approach, our lifespans are some thirty years longer and
infant mortality some ninety-five percent lower than they were at the turn of the twentieth century (Turnock, 2004). As medical procedures become more and more expensive additional strain is
put on the system. At the same time their insurers and other third-party interests are imposing tighter and tighter restrictions on the standards of care and service reimbursement. With
the growing elderly population and the changes in our familial lifestyles we as a nation are faced with a number of societal complexities which we havent experienced at any other
time in our histories. Partially as a result of improved heath care practices which result in longer life and partially as the result of the movement away from the
nuclear family of yesterday, the elderly now represent a substantial percentage of the population which is considered most at need in the U.S. The problems that we are
