The core complaint of these suits is that the federal government does not have the constitutional authority to compel citizens to purchase a product-heath insurance-which is one of the core
mandates of the new law (Iglehart, 2010). As the suits against the PPAC indicate, there is still considerable opposition to this new healthcare reform measure. However, an examination of the
new law indicates the innumerable benefits that it brings to the American people. The main benefit will be that 32 million Americans who are currently without health coverage, either
because they were too ill or too poor to obtain health insurance, can now be insured ("US health-care," 2010). Until the passage of the PPAC, a health insurance company could
deny coverage of pre-existing health conditions and/or impose a "lifetime cap on coverage" ("US health-care," 2010, p. 1135). As this indicates, the
reforms mandated by the PPAC entail considerable changes for the health insurance industry. It entails a series of reforms that are designed so that the markets that pertain to
individual and small-group insurance will operate in a manner similar to large-group coverage by pooling risks (Iglehart, 2010). In addition to providing affordable health coverage to the millions of Americans
who have no health insurance, there are important workforce investments under the new law, such as funds allocating to the education of registered and advanced practice nurses (Iglehart, 2010).
