customers and all services to have a higher level of integration. Prime Minister Tony Blair stated that he sees the development as "a new era where the service is designed
around the patient rather than the needs of the patient being forced to fit around the service already provided" (quoted Hall and Bryant, 2006). In addition to this there is
also the need to change and adapt as the targets and goals move, which they have several times within the last few decades (Kmietowicz, 2006). Changes in technology also provide
opportunities to change and create efficacy in new ways (Cornford, 2001). These factors all look to the national and macro environment, however. There is also the need for any
healthcare authority to deal with the specific healthcare issues that are present or most prevalent in the populations they care for. Different areas will have different needs, this will be
indicated by a number of factors, the area itself and the features as well as the characteristics of the population. National statistics are important, for example, for planning as by
2031 it is estimated that 40% of the entire UK population will be over the age of 40 years (Tomassini, 2005). However, these may not be the same in all
