By - Effects of government-sponsored health care programs on health care costs and health care access: While government-sponsored programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid, represent a significant percentage of overall health care spending in the US, the cost of these programs, in recent years, has advanced at a slower rate than has health care covered by private insurance (Kimbuende, et al, 2010). Between 1998 and 2008, the per capita spending increase for Medicare was 6.8 percent versus 7.1 percent for private health insurance (Kimbuende, et al, 2010). The forces driving health care cost escalation are advances in technology and new prescription drugs; a higher incidence of chronic disease; the aging of the population and administrative costs (Kimbuende, et al, 2010). However, it should be noted that administrative costs associated with Medicare are less than those for private health insurance companies. There is tremendous concern that health care costs must be controlled as national statistics show that the US spent $2.3 trillion on health care in 2008, which is three times what was spent in 1990. Federally sponsored programs, such as Medicare, Medicaid and the State Childrens Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which makes it possible for low-income parents to obtain health coverage for their children, have tremendously increased healthcare access for the elderly, low income individuals in various categories, and low income children.
