Essay / Research Paper Abstract
An 18 page research paper that discusses the prevalence of healthcare associated infections, such as MRSA, VRE, and C. difficile. This discussion of this crucial concern, first of all, describes and offers background information on this topic, giving an overview of the problem. Then, a literature review examines recent studies, summarizing results and different approaches to the problem. Using this information, an intervention is then proposed, which focuses on the research that seems most effective in offering clean guidelines on how to address cleaning and disinfecting issues as they impact on the problem of HAIs. Before offering conclusion, the final section of this investigation addresses the possible obstacles that may impact the efficacy of the proposed intervention. Bibliography lists 17 sources.

penicillin was being hailed as a "magic bullet" in medicines arsenal against disease, the discoverer of this first antibiotic, Alexander Fleming, warned that the misuse of this wonder drug would
foster resistance to it (Sheff, 2001). In 1941, almost every strain of Staphylococcus aureus was treatable with penicillin; however, by 1950, 60 percent of hospital-acquired Staphylococcus aureus infection was resistant
to this drug. As this shows, Flemings prediction has been alarmingly prophetic (Sheff, 2001). Each year, roughly 1.5 million patients develop an infection that was acquired from receiving healthcare
in the US (Carling, et al, 2005). According to Houghton (2006), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) put this figure even higher, indicating that 2 million patients annually.
The CDC also indicates that between 90,000 to 100,000 patients die each year as a result of a healthcare-associated infection (HAI). This is an extensive problem that affects healthcare worldwide.

recent studies, summarizing results and different approaches to the problem. Using this information, an intervention is then proposed, which focuses on the research that seems most effective in offering clean

that may impact the efficacy of the proposed intervention. Problem Statement The problem of HAIs is significant primarily because of its cost in human suffering and morality. However, not
only are HAIs costly in human terms, but these infections also represents a huge financial burden on healthcare institutions. In a 2004 study that focused on hospitals in Pennsylvania, 12,000
