research indicates that the incidence of asthma in industrialized countries is particularly on the rise and that it affects children and minorities in inner city area to a disproportionate degree
(Stephen, et al, 2003). U.S. government statistics show that the prevalence of asthma among 6 to 11 year olds increased from 4.7 percent in 1971-1974 to 7.6 percent in the
1976-1980 period (Stephen, et al, 2003). Research, from both urban and rural settings, shows a marked increase in the incidence of pediatric asthma (Stephen, et al, 2003). Research suggests that
the incidence of asthma "among the inhabitants of the least affluent African American and Hispanic communities" can be connected to factors typically found in poor urban environments, i.e., "high exposure
to cockroaches, smoking and dampness as well as inadequate access to health care" (Matricandi, Bouygue, and Tripoli, 2002, p. 69). Considering these facts, the following research questions were formulated
by this writer/tutor: 1. What does empirical research reveal about why children in inner city, low-income areas have a high incidence of poverty? 2. How can social workers help low-income
