Common Characteristics of Health Tourism Health tourism has developed out of an increased recognition in the inter-related and complimentary elements of health services, education and tourism (WATIC, 2005). Essentially,
health tourism can be defined as "people who travel for health or medical-related reasons" (WATIC, 2005). This not only refers to people who travel to seek out a specific
type of medical treatment, but also people who travel to spas or health facilities for stress reduction, weight loss or fitness (WATIC, 2005). "Health tourism brings advantages to the
host country both by increasing tourism, and by increasing the consumption of health and medical services" (WATIC, 2005). Increasingly, people are traveling to the countries
of Asia, including the Pacific Rim, as well as to regions of Australia and New Zealand, in order to seek out health opportunities and varied medical services providers (WATIC, 2005).
