information in the management of disease, health promotion is linked to the concept of wellness. People seek out and apply health-promoting behaviors in order to prevent disease, but
also as a means of self-actualization and the enhancement of individual health (Rankin, Stallings & London, 2005). Lifestyle choices, then,
can lead to the prevention of disease, but they are considered health promoting if they are not interventive in nature, if they promote positive health outcomes by being healthy in
their own right. For example, health promoting behaviors can include things like the decision not to smoke, to refrain from alcohol use, to use birth control and
to seek out support during pregnancy and childbirth (Rankin, Stallings & London, 2005). Health promotion campaigns, then, seek to identify these positive lifestyle choices and promote sound reasoning that
leads to healthy lifestyle, rather than introducing methods to prevent specific disease through either educational initiatives or interventions after poor behavioral choices or at-risk status have been indicated.
