preventative health strategies and the underlying theorist that support them. For the past two years, I have studied nursing and the theoretical underpinnings of nursing practice. In recent
months, my desire to transfer to a degree in health promotion is based on my belief that preventative health promotion is one of the most effective tools in reducing health
risks and improving physiological function. This belief is linked to the assessment of Nola Pender, a nursing theorist who identified the necessary model
for health promotion as a part of preventative medicine. Penders primary motivation in developing knowledge in regards to health promotions is "that health professionals intervened only after people developed
acute or chronic disease and experienced compromised lives. Attention was devoted to treating them after the fact" (Pender, 2003), which was in opposition to the basic idea that prevention was
always better than cure. Pender (2003) states that her preparation in psychology "and cognitive processes furthered [her] interest in peoples ability to take responsibility, make reasoned decisions and engage
in competent self-care" (Pender, 2003). These factors also foster my interest in the development of health promotion knowledge and as the basis for
my purpose for study. Existing research supports the benefits of this model. Lannon (1997) explains that the Pender model is based on the "Health Beliefs Model developed in
the 1950s" (p. 170). The Health Beliefs Model was developed by Rosenstock in the 1950s and modified by Becker in the 1970s, but in the meantime Pender borrowed from
