How this approach is addressed by way of promotion and education, however, is where the confusion resides, inasmuch as I may well have considered the elements of health education and
health promotion to be one and the same, when in fact they are two entirely different components of comprehensive health care. After reading the article, two different points of view
that stand out as particularly opposing to each other, as well as to my viewpoint mentioned above, illustrate the metamorphosis practitioners and administrators alike have experienced with regard to the
pursuit and maintenance of health. As such, the notion of individualistic and behaviorally-related approaches to health promotion have given way to a much more overt socio-political perspective, an occurrence
that has not taken place by any degree of similarity with health education, which has "remained relatively constant and unchanged over the last decade or so" (Whitehead, 2004, p. 311).
No matter the extent of change, however, the issue still remains that nurses are not given the accurate instruction as to the fundamental differences between the two concepts.
Whitehead (2004), for sake of clarity, delineates the foundation of health-related practices into five distinct categories: medical, preventative, educational, empowerment and socio-political. As such, the areas pertaining to medical
and prevention are classified within the context of health education, while empowerment and socio-political pursuits are reflective of health promotion. Finally, the educational approach, as the author points out,
