consumer awareness, personal preference and the limitations of conventional medicine, many people are turning to complementary and alternative medicine (Santa Ana, 2001). A survey conducted in Great Britain in 1993
showed that 33 percent of that population had employed some form of complementary therapy and more than 10 percent had consulted with a complementary practitioner (A nurses guide, 2003). In
the ensuing decade, there has been a tremendous increase in the use of complementary and alternative medicine by the general public and this area of therapy is also becoming more
relevant to mainstream health professionals (A nurses guide, 2003). According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, complementary and alternative medicine
is defined as "treatments and healthcare practices not taught widely in medical schools, not generally used in hospitals, and not usually reimbursed by medical insurance companies" (Santa Ana, 2001). These
treatments range from physical exercises, for example, tai chi or yoga, to herbal remedies to remedial art, music or chiropractic therapies (Santa Ana, 2001). The reasons why consumers turn
to these remedies and treatments are numerous. First of all, many Americans recognize that traditional interventions in the treatment of health problems in the US are often limited. Therefore, patients
who suffer from cancer, arthritis, AIDS, multiple sclerosis or acute back pain are known to frequently turn to alternative medicine. It is also true that many Americans are interested in
and aware of treatment that originate with other cultures and are considered to be alternative only in the US (Santa Ana, 2001). As the US population becomes more diverse,
