as Katrina cough), 62 were experiencing shortness of breath, and 60 were running a fever (Morantz, 2005). Twenty-three persons required hospitalization (Morantz, 2005). However, conditions and illnesses emerge over longer
periods of time and Katrina was no exception to this rule. For example, the incidence of a rash illness continued to rise over the weeks (Morantz, 2005). Of all the
illnesses and conditions, relief workers were more likely to experience these rashes (Morantz, 2005). The rashes "were classified as prickly heat, arthropod bites, and the abrasive effects of wet clothing
and moist skin" (Morantz, 2005, p. 2132). Carbon monoxide poisoning affected at least 27 people (Morantz, 2005). Of the more than 24,000 persons evacuated to Texas, 1,169 showed signs of
acute gastroenteritis (Morantz, 2005). These included 511 persons who experienced only diarrhea, 316 had both diarrhea and vomiting and 342 had only vomiting (Morantz, 2005). This particular illness spread to
emergency workers, volunteers and health care professionals (Morantz, 2005). Stool samples revealed norovirus (Morantz, 2005). Vibrio illness was found in 22 people and claimed five lives (Morantz, 2005). Morantz (2005)
warns that anyone with an open wound or any cut, even the slightest should avoid brackish water and even seawater because this a common way to get the infection (Morantz,
2005). There were many reports of persons with allergies and sinus conditions having their conditions become much worse (Perry, 2006). Many developed a cough, mentioned earlier, that they just called
the "Katrina cough that included headaches, congestion, and severe sinus complications " (Perry, 2006, p. 21). One woman finally found relief "by using Sinus Buster hot pepper nasal spray"
