many mothers dust their babies to make them smell good, and also use the products assuming they are good for the sensitive and new nature of a babys skin. However,
in more recent times talcum powder, or baby powder, has come under close scrutiny as it seems the product can be dangerous and cause many different problems. Many people today
are aware that the powder can be breathed in and cause respiratory problems, but still people use these powders. The following paper examines medical/nursing journals as it relates to irritation
and other problems associated with baby/talcum powder. The journals span several countries. Baby Powder One aspect of health and the use of talcum powder involves obese individuals. It
has often been assumed that putting baby powder in the folds of obese people reduce skin problems and the irritation caused by skin chafing. However, according to one article in
a nursing journal, "Baby powder is not recommended for use on obese patients because it tends to clump between the skinfolds and may contribute to irritation" (Mangan, 2002; 80). Apparently
it is far better to simply wash well and dry well between folds of skin, on a very frequent basis, in order to avoid skin irritation. The author further notes
the following: "Keep in mind that many obese patients develop intertrigo, a mild fungal infection within their skinfolds that powder--and particularly comstarch--can aggravate. If your patient has intertrigo, its best
to place a soft, nonstick dressing pad, such as Telfa, medicated with nystatin, in the infected area to absorb moisture and heal the infection" (Mangan, 2002; 80). Another journal
article which addresses the needs of obese patients states that, "Talcum powder and soap could be contributing factors to the respondents skin problems and simple alternatives such as emollients may
