Use Prevention; Sexual Health and Responsibility; Tobacco Use Prevention; Nutrition and Physical Activity; Mental and Emotional Health; and Personal and Consumer Health (Pateman, 2002, p. 38). Teachers use different strategies
to teach the concepts included in each of these areas (Pateman, 2002). For instance, middle school students use role-play skills needed for health behaviors (Pateman, 2002). The objective for this
particular activity is to demonstrate self-management, one of the health skills identified (Pateman, 2002). Self-management is a broad label that includes a number of different specific topics, such as managing
stress and anger, practicing good personal health strategies, developing a regular exercise program and developing a support group (Pateman, 2002). The role play activities also include ways for students to
get out of risky situations and/or ways to keep oneself safe in a risky situation (Pateman, 2002). Another unit focuses on Sexual Health and Responsibility that includes a demonstration
of strategies that could help the student in situations that would endanger their sexual health (Pateman, 2002). This unit also teaches students how to report any type of potential or
actual sexual violence (Pateman, 2002). Students further learn how to set sexual limits and the need to respect the limits of others (Pateman, 2002). For nutrition and physical activity, students
engage in activities that asses their own needs in terms of nutrition and physical activities (Pateman, 2002). Students are also taught how to practice food safety strategies (Pateman, 2002). Instruction
