As the interest in dementia continues to grow there is hope that new developments with improve the care given these individuals and improve their quality of life. DEMENTIA DEFINED The progress decline in the cognitive function of the brain which is due to damage or disease and which is more progressive than can be expected from normal aging is called dementia. The affected areas of the brain are the ones that generally control memory, attention span, language, and problem solving. When an individual displays these symptoms they are said to have cognitive symptoms. Other symptoms of dementia may include displaying suspiciousness or paranoia, delusions, anger and aggression, restlessness and agitation, wandering, sleep disturbance and/or hallucinations (Bell, 2005). In the later stages of dementia, some individuals may become confused about the simply things, such as the day, week, month or the year it is, or they may not recognize where they are or may not remember who they are. Symptoms of dementia can either be reversible or not reversible. The lasting effects of dementia depend on the cause of the disease. However, in all senses of the definition of dementia, it is irreversible and will result in the death of the affected individual. It is felt that less than 10% of all dementias are reversible (Dementia, 2005). The non-specific term dementia includes various categories and causes and the terminology changes as any of the categories of diseases processes. Dementia is generally associated with aging, but dementia can also be caused by head trauma, Parkinsons disease, Huntingtons disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, ...
