costs. This paper briefly compares the health care systems in China and the United States, and the benefits and disadvantages of each. Discussion As noted above, getting sick used to
be simpler. Today, however, the U.S. health care system is immensely complex, expensive and difficult to understand-and yet it provides substandard care. One source suggests that in the U.S. there
have been two major changes: the rise and fall of the HMOs; and the increasing popularity of PPOs, which offer "more choice than HMOs for enrollees, and yet they appear
to also offer employers a suitable framework under which they can ask employees to pay more to keep the benefits they have" (The managed care evolution, 2004). In short, the
entire structure of the U.S. health care system has changed, from a simple system where patients paid directly, to employer-sponsored care, to a maze of HMOs, PPOs, specialists, insurers, and
third parties. There are a lot of reasons for this, but two that are interrelated are the improvement in medical technology and Americans desire for the latest developments (The managed
care evolution, 2004). Unfortunately, super-sophisticated medical technology is extremely expensive, as is medical malpractice insurance, which have driven costs to the points where many millions are now uninsured; some people
simply go without medical attention at all, assuming they will remain healthy. Fortunately, most people are mostly well most of the time, so this belief is not misplaced. But it
shows up two of the biggest problems with the current system: not everyone is covered, and even if they are, its likely that patients who need extreme intervention will still
