Research Compiled By - April, 2011 Role of the individual health consumer and health care professions in the
future development and revision of health care policy: While the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) of 2010 addressed many of the problems associated with health care financing in
the US, it did not address all of them. Therefore, the task of reforming and revising health care policy comprehensively remains (Newhouse, 2010). As a health consumer who receives health
care coverage through employment with a midsize employer, Newhouse (2010) indicates that I am in a group of consumers who are probably least affected by the PPACA. However, by
2014, the Act indicates that I will be paying higher health care premiums in order to aid in financing overall reform (Newhouse, 2010). I see it as my role to
pay this tax and also support any additional efforts that Congress may take in order that all Americans have access to affordable health care. Those who oppose reform do
so for a variety of reasons, one of which is that they fear that the PPACA will result in reductions in Medicare spending, which will have the effect of reduced
care and worse care directed toward Medicare beneficiaries (Newhouse, 2010). As a health care professional, I see it as my role to ensure that all of my patients receive a
