hasty pursuit of a drug about which both Merck and the FDA knew more than they were telling. At issue was the fact that Vioxx cost Merck a tremendous
amount of money to research, manufacture and distribute, a sum whose retrieval would be vigorously sought before the drugs twenty-five year patent expired and rival companies are free to flood
the market with generics. Cutler discusses how it was made quite clear just how strong the money pull was for Merck when consumers began succumbing to cardiovascular disease from taking
the pain medication, a potentially fatal side effect about which Merck well knew from its own trials. Cutler further points out how failing to warn consumers of this consequence
brought to light a sickening display of inhumanity from a company whose sole purpose is supposed to be saving lives and relieving pain. II. DISAGREEMENT WITH CUTLER POINT Cutler
